Description
Denarius minted between 2 BC and 1 AD in LUGDUNUM (Lyon). Inscription “CAESAR AVGVSTVS DIVI F PATER PATRIAE”(= Caesar Augustus, son of the deified Caesar, father of the fatherland).
Reverse with Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, grandsons of Augustus, standing side by side with toga, spear and shield; above a ladle (simpulum) and a crook (lituus). Caption: “CL CAESARES AVGVSTI F COS DESIG PRINCIVENT” (= Gaius Caesar and Lucius Caesar, sons of Augustus, consuls-designate, leaders of the youth). Roman soldiers were paid with these denarii during the Illyrian uprising and the German wars. Replica in silver.
