Denarius of Septimius Severus (193 – 211 AD)

Description

Obverse, head to right, ANTONINUS PIUS AUG(ustus).

CONCORDIA FELIX (“the fortunate harmony”), Plautilla on the left and Caracalla dressed in a toga on the right, they look at each other and shake hands.

Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus (nicknamed “Caracalla”) was married against his will in 202 AD to Fulvia Plautilla, daughter of the powerful Praefectus Praetorio, under his father, Emperor Septimius Severus. He hated his wife, as well as his father-in-law. Through an intrigue, he was able to get Plautilla banished to the island of Lipara in 205 AD, and he had his father-in-law killed. When his father, Emperor Septimius Severus, died in 211 AD, he had Plautilla murdered shortly afterwards.
