Snake-shaped finger ring from Augst (AUGUSTA RAURICA), Switzerland, 1st century AD. Original made of gold. The snake was an important symbol in Roman religion and domestic protective spirit (e.g., against the “evil eye”), and it also played an important role in the widespread worship of the god Asclepius.
