Marcomannic shield bar, mid 1st century AD
Typical Germanic shield bar from a Marcomannic burial ground, middle of the first century AD. Only about 15% of men capable of bearing arms owned a shield; Graves with a shield are always quite wealthy and often have a sword in addition to the lance. The shield bar has a length of 23 cm and comes with 4 typical thimble-shaped rivets. The rivets are also available individually for attaching a shield boss; price 8 euros/piece.
